The Question Girl

This has been my day:

At Target:
Mommy, what did [friend] say?
I don't know, baby.
Mama, what did [friend] say when I wanted to go on the carousel?
(light dawning -- she's talking about an incident at playgroup a month ago)
She said the carousel didn't have a cat on it.
Mama, why did she say that?
Because she didn't know there was a cat.
Mommy, what did [friend's] mommy say?
I don't know, baby.
Mama, what did I do when [friend] said there wasn't a cat?
You cried.
Yeah, I did. Why did [friend] say there wasn't a cat?
Because she didn't know there was a cat.
Mommy, what did [friend] say?
She said there wasn't a cat on the carousel.
Yeah. And what did I do?
You cried.
What did [friend's] mommy say?
I don't know, baby.
Why did friend say there wasn't a cat?
Because she didn't know that carousel has a cat.
What did I do when [friend] said there wasn't a cat?
You cried.
Yeah, I did. Why did I cry?
Because [friend] said there wasn't a cat on the carousel.
Mommy, what did [friend] say?
FOR THE LOVE OF PETE, M, PLEASE STOP ASKING ME THE SAME QUESTION EVERY TWO SECONDS.
Waaah! Mommy, stop yelling! You scared me!
Sorry baby.

[beat]

Mommy, what did [friend] say?

In the car:

Mommy, what song is this?
I don't know, baby.
Why don't you know?
Because I don't remember this disk.
Can you find out?
Not right now.
Waaaah! Mommy, what song is this?
[make up name]
Who sings this song, Mommy? A boy or a lady?
A boy.
What does the boy look like?
I don't know, honey. There's no picture.
Is he a little boy wearing a hat?
Sure.
What color is the hat?
Red.
No, pink!
Ok, pink.
Why is it pink?
I don't know, baby.
Well, can you find out?
Not right now. I'm driving.
Mommy, what song is this?
[made up name]
Why is the boy singing?
Because it's his job.
Why is it his job?
Because it is.
But whhhhhhyyyyyy!
Because it is.
[beat]
What song is this, Mommy?

Does anyone know where I can buy a toddler-sized muzzle?

OMG thank goodness my kids did NOT do this. Growing up one of the younger kids in the neighborhood got dubbed, "WHY." It was her favorite word. She didn't just drive her mother crazy (I think as child 4 out of 6 her mother probably encouraged her to "visit the neighbors"), she drove us ALL crazy. She grew up to be a lovely girl and one of my favorite high school chums. There is hope!
